Online Casinos for Beginners
So you have decided you fancy a go at gambling in an Internet
casino, and you've read and understood the Survival
Guide. Now what do you do...
Download
or not download?
There are essentially two types of online casino - those that
require a download (to install software on your computer)
and those that run from the web and you can play from your
browser (usually Java, Flash or Shockwave based). Most security
implications of web-based casinos have been ironed out, so
it is down to personal preference. Download casinos usually
give you better graphics, multi-player games (you can often
interact with other players at the table) and more options
on the games you are playing. Browser casinos are easier and
quicker to play, but lack the interaction element. If you've
got an old computer go for the browser casino. If you've got
a really slow connection, go for the download or take the
third option of having a copy of the casino sent to you on
CD.
For Free
or For real
Whichever type of casino you find yourself playing, you will
almost certainly be given the option of playing for free or
playing for real money. Play for free to start with and get
a feel for the casino before diving in the deep end. You may
have to set up an 'account' to play for real (don't worry,
they can't debit your card or anything if you don't give them
the details); this is 'normal' and more to do with the software
than anything else.
When you do decide to play for real, you may find that you
need to open another account. Again, this is normal and separates
your free plays from your paying plays at the casino end.
Make sure you log in to the correct account each time you
come back and play.
Coughing
up
Just about all casinos let you pay by credit card, debit card,
cheque payment and bank transfer. In fact, if there's a way
to give them money, they'll take it. Obviously cheques need
to go by post and take time to clear. Not good for an 'instant'
play, but very good if you think you need a cooling off period.
PINs and
needles
When you've opened your 'real' account you will be sent a
PIN (Personal identification Number) by snail mail (to ensure
your address is what you say it is and to cross reference
with where your credit card is registered). Although you can
play and win at the casino before you receive your PIN, you
will not be able to make a withdrawal.
Taking
the Money
You've won, you've got your PIN and you want to cash-out.
Here you'll find out how good the casino is that you've been
playing at (of course if you've taken our advice, you will
be forewarned). Some casinos are quick and some are downright
sluggish. Some require thousands of pieces of identification
faxed to them and others will take your word for it.
Another difference is in the fees charged. You should be able
to get your winnings equal to the amount of your last deposit
credited straight back to your card. Anything extra will then
come by cheque (note this is often a credit card company stipulation
and out of the hands of the casino). You would be forgiven
in thinking that this should naturally be free, but NO, some
casinos think they should charge you for sending you a winnings
cheque - make sure you don't play with them! You may also
have the option to have your winnings transferred to your
bank account by electronic transfer. This is a lot quicker
but you will certainly be charged (more).
Bonuses
and Promotions
Before jumping in to a casino and availing yourself of an
enticing offer of a bonus (something like "£50
free when you sign up"), read the small print. Then read
it again. Alternatively, look around this site and we'll tell
you what it says. More often than not, there will be 'qualification'
hurdles to get over. These may include terms like having to
play with the same amount or more as the bonus with your
money before the bonus is added. Also, the casino may stipulate
which games you can play with it (to prevent the £25
on black and £25 on red brigade).
As with all things 'Internet Gambling', you will find quality
and good brands shining through here. Play at a lesser casino,
one without a good name or review on this site, and you may
find the casino refusing to pay out your winnings gathered
through the bonus. The unscrupulous manager will see you've
deposited £50, got a £50 bonus, won £200
and want to cash out, and adamantly ignore your requests.
And on
that word of warning.. Over to you and have fun!!
